Europeans are passionate about soccer! Stadiums are filled with fans and many never miss seeing their favorite team play. A century ago, a group of 4 young men from the city of Split decided to form a team and the Hajduk soccer team was born. This past week they celebrated the 100th anniversary with a spectacular display all over Split with a party of thousands of fans from all parts of Croatia.
Dubrovnik also paid tribute to this local team by lighting up the city walls and gigantic red flares were shot off at midnight. Looking down from Mt. Srd, the old town appeared to be burning, but it was a well planned and controlled display. Not to say there were not a few minor burns suffered by over enthusiastic fans.
Congratulations Hajduk, the town of Dubrovnik salutes you!
